Chuck vs. the Ring

Posted by spragujs on April 28, 2009

Chuck vs the RingWell, yesterday I had a foot long sub from Subway and purchased two seasons of Chuck on DVD.  Then I watched the (please, please, PLEASE let it be season) finale of Chuck on NBC.  Dunno what else I can really do!  Though the Chuck page on NBC has some misleading headers.  In the upper right, last night’s episode is listed as the series finale, but elsewhere on the page it only says season.  [Edit:  Looks like NBC updated the page now, but check this article for a picture of what the Chuck site used to say (the comments may prove interesting as well)…]  And, spoilers below if you haven’t seen the episode yet!

The finale was great!  I don’t think it was quite as good as last week’s episode, but it was off by only a small margin.  Ellie’s wedding gets messed up by Chuck’s spy life, though I wouldn’t have predicted her canceling it.  Chuck called in Casey (and his team of Marines) to save her from Roark.  He then recruits them to plan a super impromptu wedding later that day for Ellie on the beach (as she’d wanted it).  Marines planning a wedding = highly improbable.  However, it was also really blooming funny!  Plus, I think Casey’s sense of honor would have gotten him to do it, and the loyalty of his men would have gotten them to help him, so…  Still, it’s pretty funny and improbable!  And Casey after he and his team save the day says to Chuck, “You rang?”  LMAO!

Bryce Larkin and Sarah are going to take over the Intersect project.  Bryce will have it downloaded into his head.  They asked Chuck to be their analyst at the beginning of the episode, but he turned them down ’cause he just wants to be a normal guy.  At the reception to Chuck’s version of Ellie’s wedding (the first one had been trashed by the gun fight (not to mention that it was cancelled), Bryce’s handler (for lack of a better word) comes to take him for his mission, but Orion flashes (?!) on the guy and knows he’s not CIA, heck he’s presumed dead!  Sarah goes off to save Bryce, and Casey, who she says they’ll know about if they know about Bryce.  Chuck can’t let her go alone, and when Orion realizes he means it, he gives Chuck his arm computer.  Chuck plays in-the-field analyst to Sarah and Casey while they try and get to Bryce.  Chuck eventually finds Bryce in the new intersect room.  Bryce has been shot and eventually dies after giving Chuck a chip that will destroy the Intersect ’cause it’s too dangerous.  Chuck wars with himself and realizes the Intersect is needed.  He downloads it and then destroys it with the chip.  The bad guys come in with Sarah and Casey all but captured, and Chuck 3.0 takes them out.  The last line of the episode, “You guys, I know kung fu!”  To Be Continued flashes across the screen.  I surely hope so, but I’m starting to lose hope after all the stuff I’ve been reading.

Well, this post is so condensed that I’m almost leery to publish it, but there it is; some of the important bits with a couple funny lines.  I think this episode could work as a series finale if necessary, but there are clearly so many ways for this to go that it’d be a huge shame to cancel it now.  Plus, it’s my favorite show on TV right now!  *sigh*  Here’s to another season of Chuck!  (And many more!)  😉

Most of my data was collected from this blog.  So, based on this info, and making the big assumption that all the shows I’ve listed as in trouble would not be coming back, my TV viewing would be down from 44 shows to 28 for the beginning of next year (not counting any new shows I might be interested in).  That’s a pretty big drop!  (Yes, yes, I know it’s a lot, but keep in mind these aren’t all on at the same time (i.e. season) and I also DVR pretty much everything, so it’s not like I’ve sucked up all my evenings with TV unless I happen to be home.)  Also, I have to admit that I didn’t get around to watching either Life on Mars or My Own Worst Enemy.  I had them all stored up on my DVR for watching till I heard they got cancelled.  Not much reason to start liking something after the fact.  Also, I read about the finale of Life on Mars and was disappointed they went that route, so I decided not to watch even though it ended up being a complete story.

Chuck vs. the Colonel

Posted by spragujs on April 21, 2009

Chuck vs the Colonel

Colonel Casey, that is!  Anyway, I’ve decided not to make this a recap.  At least not mostly.  I read (somewhere, I can’t freaking find it) that the third season of Chuck (should it get picked up for a third season) would take the show in a new direction, and if the end of this episode is any indication, that couldn’t be more true!  There do be SPOILERS below!! Also, before I forget to mention it, I think I giggled every other minute the whole time I was watching this episode.  It was great!

The Intersect has been removed from Chuck’s brain, and Morgan’s going to Hawaii with Anna (and I don’t mean on vacation)?!  I’m good with those changes, as a matter of fact, I’m excited to see where this new direction would take the show, and next Monday’s season (please let it not be the series) finale might give us some idea, but then again maybe not!  It’ll be Ellie and Awesome’s wedding, so we will get that at least.  🙂

Just to see if I can get some people interested, here’s a list from Television without Pity as to why Chuck should be renewed.  I’d also like to add that I’ve almost always been impressed at how they integrate the Buy More scenes with the action/spy stuff.  It’d be really easy to throw things off by switching back and forth, but they manage to integrate the two stories quite well, IMO.

Also, here’s TWoP’s list of the guest stars that Chuck expertly uses.

So, please if you watch Chuck, don’t miss the finale next Monday!  And if you’re interested in watching what’s happened so far (I’d love to addict more people to this show), do me a favor and go buy the DVD sets!  Season one is available now and Season two is ready for preorder.  (Such purchasing can sometimes influence the continuation of the show!)  I have them in my shopping cart for purchase after I get paid again on Friday.  😉

Chuck vs. the Predator

Posted by spragujs on March 24, 2009

Chuck vs. the Predator

Well, apparently the previews after the last episode were long term ones ’cause this episode only finally (at the end) had General Beckman telling Chuck he needed to become a spy.  She needs Chuck (and doesn’t want to lose him as the intersect) ’cause he’s the only one that’s been able to find Orion, in spite of the teams of analysts she’s had searching for years.  On the down side, Sarah has been following orders (if reluctantly) and Chuck has decided that means she’s not on his side.  Ironically, Casey tells the General at the end that he believes 100% in Sarah’s ability to perform in her mission.  (How sweet!)  😉

Chuck found Orion this episode.  Or at least put together a search that led Orion to him.  Unfortunately, Fulcrum found out that Chuck had found Orion and used Chuck to get to him.  Orion sacrificed himself rather than let Fulcrum at him.  Incidentally, the guy playing the Fulcrum agent was played by the Mummy, so it’s not surprising that the guy died at least twice and came back in this episode!  😉

The Buy More side plot was fairly well integrated plot wise, but also too distracting for my taste.  It went a bit like this: Orion tried to contact Chuck by sending a high tech computer to him at the Buy More.  At the same time the Buy More was supposed to get a fancy new model computer at their store (rather than the original Beverly Hills Buy More) thus setting of a mini Buy More war.  I’m still a bit confused as to whether the fancy new computer was a cover up for Orion sending Chuck his fancy computer or what, ’cause near as I can tell, that actual fancy computer never showed up at the Buy More.  Part of what brought the stories together was when Big Mike hides Chuck’s computer from him in his office and then Fulcrum, Chuck and co., as well as Lester and Jeff all try to steal it from BM’s office at the same time.

Well, next week still doesn’t look like there will be any training.  I’m still a bit disgruntled about that.  Guess I’ll have to go back to not watching the previews.  Things were always better that way!  :-\

Chuck vs. the Lethal Weapon

Posted by spragujs on March 10, 2009

Chuck vs. the Lethal Weapon

I haven’t written a post about Chuck in a long time.  I guess for the most part, it’s not like a big mystery show like Dollhouse, where you might want to try and keep up on things.  I dunno that it needs to be analyzed as overall the premise is pretty simple.  It’s just a highly, highly entertaining show.  I wish more people were watching!  Or that it was already renewed and it didn’t matter how many people are watching.  😉  Chuck’s kinda got it all:  comedy, action, romance, family stories.  There’s a little something for everyone I think.

In any case, just a summary of the episode.  …  Hmm, now that I’m thinking about it, quite a lot happened last night.  And I just called the show simple.  I’d still argue that it is.  It’s very easy to follow.  I even suspect that a person could pretty easily jump into the show at any time and still get the gist of what’s going on.  Interesting!  Serious kudos to the writers and editors and actors, etc. for being able to pull off such a stunt!

In the end of the episode, the main things that happened were that Chuck professed his intent to never give up on his wish to have a relationship with Sarah even if he just isn’t willing to follow through with a fake version.  He also found out that there’s a guy out there that may be able to get the Intersect out of his head, thus theoretically freeing things up for him and Sarah to get together for real.

For me I’d almost say that the best part of this episode was that Chuck, with a little coaxing from the MI-6 agent, finally figured out that he needs to be able to protect himself better.  Next episode will apparently be Chuck’s start in this direction.

Couple things from that.  Chuck’s relationship with Cole Barker (MI-6) for the last couple episodes was freaking hilarious.  Cole is an obviously good match for Sarah and he pursues her relentlessly (especially after Chuck tells him there’s nothing between them).  I think in doing so, he made Sarah realize just how much she does care for Chuck even though the dude was hot, extremely competent, and actually pretty nice (if a lot over the top, IMO).  😉  So, anyway, Chuck’s obviously jealous of the guy because he’s pretty much everything Chuck’s not.  Chuck spends a decent amount of the last two episodes trying to convince Sarah (and Casey!) that he’s not a slouch while in doing so he actually kinda makes himself look silly (which isn’t uncommon anyway).  And at the same time he clearly actually kinda likes Cole (and definitely respects him).

Cole in the meantime frequently (if sorta indirectly) points out Chuck’s flaws by trying to turn praise on Chuck rather than himself (when Chuck’s deeds were always inferior to his own).  It was actually more funny than irritating to me, which was surprising.  But what really made it easy to overlook was that Cole was willing to take chances on Chuck when Sarah and Casey never had before.  He even gave Chuck a gun and sent him in first (which worked out in the end, but may have not been the best idea ever) to save Casey and Sarah from Fulcrum.  Chuck frequently manages to save the day, but usually in much different ways and sometimes kinda on accident.  In any case, besides that Cole tells him to start packing at the end, I think this incident was what decided Chuck on getting some training.

Now, on Chuck getting training.  I suspect a lot of people out there are afraid it’ll change the feel of the show.  I say sure, it might, but I’m ok with that at this point.  Chuck will still be a bumbling newbie even if he learns how to use a gun, etc.  And frankly, his lack of experience was just getting to be unrealistic and a tad annoying.  He’s a capable guy and should be given the chance to not look like an idiot quite so often.  Heck, he practically pulls off the attitude when he’s playing Charles Carmichael as it is.  I’m more than happy to see a change in the game at this point.  Bring it on!

Chuck vs. the Alma Mater

Posted by spragujs on November 7, 2007

Hey! It’s about time I blogged again! Monday’s episode of Chuck finally inspired me! First of all, I’d like to thank the writers for toning Morgan down some! He’s still been annoying lately, but at a much more tolerable level, and he’s become much more entertaining to me. 🙂

Then there was the back story goodness of this episode. *contented sigh* Bryce Larkin wasn’t a jackass! Not really surprising overall since so many people liked him; it’s just that now we have confirmation! Bryce got Chuck kicked out of school because he didn’t want his friend to get sucked into the monster life that would have been the CIA. We now know that Bryce didn’t accidentally send Chuck the info. He knew from his talk with the professor that Chuck’s mind was like a sponge and could capture 98% (if I’m understanding it correctly) of the images that were encoded within images which is the form the Intersect took when Bryce emailed it. And Bryce probably treated Chuck like dirt at the end to make sure that Chuck wouldn’t try and contact him with awkward questions.

So, I just have a few questions left. What was the Omaha (sorry, can’t remember the exact name) project the CIA wanted to put Chuck on? Is that going to be a recurring issue, or just a one off? I’d think they wouldn’t have mentioned it specifically in the show at all if it wasn’t important, but I could be wrong. Also, about Chuck’s girl… Was she in on it with Bryce? Did Bryce steal her away to make sure that Chuck wouldn’t want to go back to Stanford? Maybe not a big deal, but I am curious. Oo, and as Chuck wondered, if Bryce “betrayed” Chuck in order to save him, what was his motivation for destroying the Intersect? Oh, and one last question that I’ve been wondering from the first… Do either Sarah or Chuck know that Casey was the one who killed Bryce?

Yay! More reason to keep watching than just the fun characters and such! 😀

Reaper – What About Blob

Posted by spragujs on October 25, 2007

So, I haven’t written anything about Reaper.  As proven to me by my having to add the show as a category just now!  😉  Anyway, the main character’s parents sold his soul to the devil before he was even born.  (Thought they couldn’t have kids so it’d be ok; guess they never thought about the devil fixing that part for himself!)  Now Sam works as a bounty hunter for the devil to bring escaped souls back to where they belong.

Ok, first for those of you not watching I have a couple of comments on the characters/actors.  Ray Wise, playing the devil, is a genius!  And Sam’s sidekicks are far more entertaining (and actually in on it) than Morgan on Chuck.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they should send Morgan along; they should just ditch his character.  *shudder*  Sorry about the side note, but I had to say it somewhere!

Anyway, I’m going to keep this one short and mostly talk about the most recent episode ’cause some larger overarching storylines were affected.  First off, Sam has a girl that he likes and works with named Andi.  He’s been lying to her (and with really pathetic excuses too) when he goes off to capture or research about the souls.  This episode he thought about telling her the truth and the devil not only sabotaged this effort, but told Sam that it would be dangerous for her.  My thought?  Please, no!  If the show drags this out for too long it could get more than a little annoying!

Last interesting bit that I felt needed said was about Sam’s dad.  He played like he felt really bad about doing this to Sam and insisted that Sam let him help go over his contract to see if there are any loopholes.  Well, he found something.  He tore out one page and burned it.  Question is, what is he trying to hide from Sam?  Something that would have made them even more ashamed?  Or worse, an actual loophole that would have saved Sam, but brought some sort of wrath down on mom or dad?  Too bad that dad’s turned out to continue to be a butthole.  Maybe he’s hiding something else, but what?

Chuck vs. the Helicopter

Posted by spragujs on October 2, 2007

Last night’s episode was fun again! This time the feds sent in a doctor to get their secrets out of Chuck’s head. The guy thought he could do it, but got blown up on his way out of town. Many hijinks ensued as Sarah and Casey both thought the other had killed the doctor and spent all their time trying to get Chuck to believe them. Surprisingly (kinda) Casey convinced Chuck that Sarah had done it (he had help with Chuck’s head telling him that Sarah’d killed a bunch of French “diplomats”). In the long run, they all figured out that none of the others had done it. Especially when the doctor kidnapped Sarah to torture Chuck’s identity out of her. Chuck was supposed to stay in the car and didn’t. He got kidnapped in the process and ended up landing a helicopter after he’d tranquilized the pilot. Long story short, or perhaps longer, the doc doesn’t help Chuck as he gets incarcerated and Sarah convinces Chuck to want to be a hero rather than have to be a hero.

Some of the funny bits: Adam Baldwin in a Buy More uniform makes me laugh out loud. Casey chasing down a shoplifter and Chuck having to keep him from pummeling the punk. Kids in the hot dog store just to watch Sarah…

Also, another good part was that Morgan wasn’t half as annoying this episode. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d care much if he wasn’t on the show at all…

Chuck – Pilot

Posted by spragujs on September 25, 2007

I watched the series premier of Chuck last night. It was quite the fun bit of show! Ok, so as the pilot this episode set up what the show was going to be about. Obviously, Chuck has a bit to do with it. Chuck lives with his sister, Ellie, and her boyfriend and works as the head of the Nerd Herd at Buy More. The episode starts out with Ellie holding a birthday party for Chuck which he and his friend Morgan (also a Buy More employee) are trying to escape from ’cause they don’t know anyone there. Ellie is trying to find Chuck a girl. It fails miserably, but we do find out about an old girlfriend that Chuck met his freshman year at Stanford who ended up with his roommate. Which, of course, brings us to the roommate. He’s Bryce Larkin, who was a track star and gymnast at Stanford. The random girl Chuck ends up talking to at the party about the old girlfriend has even heard about the guy. Chuck thinks Bryce is now an accountant.
